LINCOLN, Neb. - The Illinois men's track and field team wrapped up its weekend of action at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invite on Saturday. The Illini recorded 18 season bests, 15 personal records, 12 top-10 finishes and three changes to the school's all-time lists during the two-day event.
"This meet featured top-flight competition in a first class facility," noted head coach Mike Turk. "It was definitely a good test for us. I think our team responded well and we will be better for it down the road. We had a couple really outstanding performances and a bunch of personal bests."
On Friday, Davis Fraker produced the highlight of the weekend, shattering his own school record in the weight throw with a toss of 21.80m (71' 6").
"Davis had a great series with five throws over his personal best," said Turk. "He has been consistently right under his best for a couple of weeks now, so this was a huge breakthrough that has been a long time coming. His performance should position him well to qualify for the NCAA Championships. I'm really happy for Davis to be accomplishing these things as a senior."
On Saturday, it was DJ Zahn who had the Illini's best performance. In the 200m, Zahn ran 20.96 to finish third in the field. The performance pushes Zahn up to second on Illinois' all-time event list. In the same, Brandon Stryganek ran a season-best time of 21.26 to finish sixth.
"DJ is another senior that is showing everyone how to elevate their performances," Turk stated. "He has just gone to a whole other level with two personal bests this weekend. His performance in the 200 was electrifying. He got out of the blocks well and had an incredible finish. It is too bad he didn't get to run head-to-head with the top two guys because I believe he would have gone even faster, but he will get other opportunities."
The 60m hurdle finals also featured an Illini moving up the top-10 list. David Kendziera finished third in 7.93, jumping to seventh on the Illini list. Cam Viney was right behind Kendziera in the race, finishing fourth in 7.97.
"David has a history of putting up his best performances in the big meets," proclaimed Turk. "I am really pleased with both his prelim and final races."
Garrett Lee grabbed second in the 800m with a 1:53.61 showing. Alex Gold also collected a second-place finish, this one in the 3,000m, with a career-best time of 8:17.68. Paul Zeman was seventh in the mile with a personal-best performance of 4:10.02.
The 4x400m relay team of Kendziera, Kenneth Allen, Viney and Zahn wrapped up the action on the track with a second-place finish. The quartet's time of 3:10.90 was close to Illinois' best this season.
"I was really happy with the performance in the 4 x 4," Turk concluded. "We didn't have Joey McAsey on this trip so the next man up, Cam, filled in and did very well. Kendziera and Allen, our first two legs, got us out into the race well. Viney helped out on the third leg and Zahn ran a tremendous anchor."
In the field events, Branden Tanthavong finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 15.04m (49' 4.25"). In the vertical jumps, Jonathan Wells placed fifth in the high jump with a clearance of 2.10m (6' 10.75"), and Mitch Mammoser cleared a personal best 5.01m (16' 5.25") to finish ninth in the pole vault.
Illinois will return to action next weekend at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. Action begins on Friday, Feb. 13 and continues through Saturday, Feb 14.
