Illini Starts Season Strong with Illinois Challenge Victory

Jan. 29, 2011

VENICE, Fla. -

The Illinois women’s golf team started the 2011 spring season off with its third straight victory in the Illinois Challenge, defeating Illinois State 8-4. The third year of the match play event, played at the par-72, 6,260-yard Sarasota National Golf Club in Venice, Fla., included both four-ball matches and individual matches between the two teams.

It was a tightly contested match during the four morning four-ball matches, with both teams securing two victories each. Junior Hailey Koschmann and sophomore Crystal Smith, a Venice, Fla. native, teamed up to win Illinois’ first point, a 4 & 3 victory over Terra Miller and Rachel Powers. Also winning a point for Illinois were junior Samantha Sloan and freshman Ember Schuldt, defeating Hannah Bachman and Brianna Cooper 4 & 3. Winning for Illinois State were Katie Jean and Kaitlin Reid, a 2 up victory over senior Raquel Hopton and junior Katelin Dilger, and Jordyn Wyzgowski and Carlee Cossell, a 2 & 1 victory over junior Nora Lucas and freshman Jacqueline Calamaro.

Heading into the eight individual matches, both teams were tied at two-all, with five wins securing the Challenge title. Illinois had one more victory than was needed, taking six of the eight individual matches in the afternoon session. Illinois had wins from Dilger (3 & 2), Koschmann (4 & 3), Lucas (1 up), Calamaro (7 & 6), Sloan (7 & 6) and Schuldt (2 & 1). With six points coming from the individual matches, Illinois won the Illinois Challenge by a margin of 8-4.

"It was a solid start to the season," head coach Renee Slone said. "We got things rolling and saw a lot of good golf being played. There were a number of good matches that had lots of pars and birdies, and it was taking birdies to win holes. It was an exciting way to get things started this spring season."

Illinois will open its spring tournament season on Feb. 27 at the Kinderlou Forest Challenge in Valdosta, Ga.
