The Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic concluded on Tuesday as the 17-team field completed the third and final round at the par-72 6,302-yard Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo. Illinois (891) carded a final round 306 to finish the tournament in tenth at 27-over par. Illinois' 54-hole tournament total is the second lowest 54-hole tournament total in school history.
"Today was a bit of a stumbling block, but it's all learning experience," head coach Renee Slone said. "Often times when you have a career best round it's kind of tough to come back the next day and follow it up. We're going to do some analysis here and figure out what we need to focus on and what we can improve upon, so that we can build from this for Notre Dame."
The Orange and Blue were led by a trio of juniors as junior Hailey Koschmann (219) fired a final round 79 to finish in a tie for 20th at three-over par. Junior Samantha Sloan (223) had a third round 76 to end the tournament at seven-over par and in a tie for 30th, while fellow junior Nora Lucas (224) shot a 77 in her final round to conclude the tournament eight-over par and in a tie for 34th.
Freshman Ember Schuldt (229) had the best round on the day of the Illinois golfers, carding a two-over par 74 and finished her first tournament as an Illini in a tie for 58th at 13-over par. Senior Raquel Hopton (233) had a third round 82 and finished at 17-over par.
"The first round was a mediocre start," Slone said. "We really turned it up a notch in the afternoon, so that was very exciting. We certainly going to work hard to build off of that and really think about what was working well to continue moving forward."
Colorado (865) took home the team title, finishing two strokes ahead of runner-up California (867). Rounding out the top five were Oregon (872), Louisville (873) and Baylor (874). Kayla Mortellaro of Idaho garners medalist honors after a nine-under par 207, two strokes ahead of Colorado's Emily Talley (209).
"Our second round from Monday was terrific," Slone said. "Breaking the school record was very exciting and having four excellent scores posted showed the team what they are capable of doing. Now we just need to figure out how to go about doing that more often."
Illinois will next be in action at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind., on Oct. 2-3.
