The Illinois women's golf team had a solid start to the 2010 fall season at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic, held at the par-72, 6,302-yard Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort, Collins, Colo. Illinois started the tournament with a first round 300 (+12), but came alive in the second round, posting a 285 (-3), the lowest team single round in school history. The Illini (+9) had a 36-hole total of 585 and are tied for 5th in the 17-team field, with Colorado State leading the tournament at -1 after rounds of 290-285.
Junior Hailey Koschmann (140) leads the Illini with two sub-par rounds of one-under par 71 in the first round and a three-under par 69. The junior from Lake Forest, Ill., tailed four birdies and only one bogey in her second round. Koschmann's 69 ties her career low single round, which she set during the 2009-10 season. Koschmann heads into the final day of play at four-under par and is tied for fifth. She trails leader Kayla Mortellaro of the University of Idaho by three strokes.
Juniors Nora Lucas and Samantha Sloan both had three birdies and one eagle en route to a two-round total of 147 (+3). Lucas had rounds of 75-72, while Sloan had a first round 77 and a sub-par round of 70, improving her score by seven strokes from the first round to the second. Both juniors are in a tie for 21st and set career low single rounds in the second round, with Lucas shooting an even-par 72 and Sloan shooting a two-under par 70.
Rounding out the Illini is senior Raquel Hopton, who had a 36-hole total of 151 (77-74) and is seven-over par, and Freshman Ember Schuldt, making her Illinois debut, with a two-round total of 155 (77-78) and is 11-over par.
