Parkhill maintains third at Illinois Amateur

Aug. 11, 2010

Chicago, Ill. - Illinois senior Clayton Parkhill remains in the hunt at the Illinois Amateur Championship. Parkhill shot an even par 71 and, at -4 for the tournament, is just three strokes out of the lead in third place through 36 holes at Beverly Country Club in Chicago.

University of Iowa's Vince India from Deerfield holds the lead at -7. Illinois junior Luke Guthrie is tied for 18th at +4 after a second round 75. Only seven players shot under par for their rounds in tough playing conditions.

"The greens were inconsistent in the afternoon," Parkhill said. "My ball striking was not quite as good as it was on Tuesday, but I was able to get up and down. Birdie putts and the lag puts were difficult because the greens took quite a beating."

The field was cut to 30 players, who will play 36 holes on Thursday with heat indexes once again predicted over 100 degrees. Sophomore Ross Frankenberg missed the cut by one stroke, finishing in a tie for 41st at +6 after his second straight 74.

"I would love to have the lead, but am still happy with my position," Parkhill said. "Scores were lower in the morning today, but tomorrow everyone will be playing at the same time. With the heat you need to conserve energy, both physically and mentally. I just want to think about one shot at a time and not let my mind wander. That's when you get tired mentally."
