BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Freddie Turnell secured his first victory as a Fighting Illini, and No. 13-ranked Illinois posted a runner-up team finish to close out the regular season on Sunday in the Hoosier Collegiate at The Pfau Course.
The victory is the second collegiate win for Turnell who was competing as an individual in the event. After an opening 72 to sit 1-over, he recorded back-to-back scores of 70 in Rounds 2 and 3, finishing as the only competitor under par for the weekend at 212 (-1).
The Fighting Illini (+23) carded a three-round team total 875 to finish three shots behind Kansas (+20) in the race for the team title. The Orange and Blue held off third-place finisher and B1G foe Purdue (+28) by five strokes and picked up head-to-head victories over all nine of the other conference opponents in the field.
Three members of the Illini lineup posted top-10 finishes. Junior Dane Huddleston closed the weekend alone in fifth place, four shots behind Turnell with at 3-over, while sophomore Jake Birdwell and senior Ryan Voois each finished 4-over in a tie for sixth.
Junior Max Herendeen and Sophomore Trey Marrion also posted matching scores of 14-over 227 to tie for 37th.
Junior Ethan Wilson, also competing as an individual, tied for 17th at 8-over to record the fifth top-20 in his last six outings.
The Fighting Illini now turn their attention to the postseason. The Orange and Blue tee off May 1-3 at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club's Witch Hollow Course in North Plains, Ore., for the 2026 Big Ten Men's Golf Championship. The Orange and Blue are in search of their 14th title in the last 17 league championships dating back to the 2008-09 season, and the 21st in program history.
