Illinois moved up a couple of spots to second at the NCAA West Regional at Gold Mountain Golf Club's Olympic Course. The Illini shot a four-over par 292 to sit at +9 heading in Sunday's third and final round. More importantly, the Illini are four shots ahead of sixth-place Colorado State. The top five spots advance to the NCAA Championships.
While Luke Guthrie and Matt Hoffman were the top Illinois performers Thursday, junior Scott Langley and senior Zach Barlow each shot under par rounds for the Illini on Friday. Langley birdied three of his final four holes to finish at two-under 70. Barlow had four birdies on his round to finish with a 71.
"We are a team by committee," head coach Mike Small said. "Different guys have carried us on different days this year. Tomorrow, though, we need everyone to be ready. There can be no off days."
Top seed Washington shot a five-under par 283 on its home course and has a commanding lead at -7. The Illini are in second at +9, one stroke ahead of a tie for third with USC and San Diego at +10. Oregon State is at +11 followed by Colorado State at +13. Middle Tennessee State (+17), VCU (+19), Eastern Michigan (+21) and New Mexico (+24) round out the top 10 in the 13-team field.
Individually, Guthrie, who shot 75 on Friday, and Langley are tied for 11th at +1. Seven players are under par for the tournament led by Darren Wallace of Washington at -5. Barlow is tied for 18th, one stroke back at +2. Junior Chris DeForest and senior Matt Hoffman are tied for 52nd and 64th, respectively, heading into the final day.
"We can't look behind us," Small said of the strategy for Friday. "We need to get off to a good start and be engaged from the starting point. We're looking to gain momentum and seek a rhythm. If we have a solid round, we'll be okay."
