No. 12 Illinois holds a six-stroke lead after the first of three rounds at the FAU Spring Break Invitational. The Illini shot a two-under par 282 while second-place Notre Dame shot 288. Penn State (290), Michigan (290) and host Florida Atlantic (291) rounds out the top five schools.
Individually, Illini junior Chris DeForest fired a first-round 67 and sits in second place, three strokes behind Notre Dame's Doug Fortner. DeForest had an eagle on the par-five seventh then had three birdies on the back nine. Overall, he played the par fives and -4. Kelly Kretz of Marquette and Nick Newcomb of Murray State are tied for third at -3.
Illinois has four players in the top 15. Senior Zach Barlow shot even par on the 6,722-yard par 71 Gleneagles Country Club Course. Junior Scott Langley and sophomore Luke Guthrie each shot one-over par 72. Guthrie had and up and down day with five birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey. Senior Matt Hoffman, meanwhile started his back nine with four birdies in his first five holes en route to a three-over par 74 and is tied for 33rd in a 93-man field.
Two Illini are competing individually - freshman Ross Frankenberg and junior Clayton Parkhill each shot 75 and are tied for 48th.
The second and third rounds are slated for Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
