The Illinois (615) women’s golf team won its first title of the 2010-11 season as they won the first annual Memphis Women’s Invitational held at the par-71, 6,176-yard Ridgeway Country Club in Germantown, Tenn. Illinois won the tournament after the third and final round was cancelled due to inclement weather. Illinois began the tournament off in fourth place after a first round 314, but responded in the second round to move into first after carding a 301, the lowest round of the tournament. Illinois’ 36-hole total is the fourth-lowest 36-hole tournament in program history.

“We’re very excited to come away with a win, especially since we didn’t get off to the best start in yesterday’s first round,” head coach Renee Slone. “We came back well in the afternoon to have the low round of the tournament and it was unfortunate the weather didn’t allow us to play any of the third round today. That just goes to show you how important every round is.”

The Illini finished six stokes ahead of runners-up Memphis (621) and Missouri State (621). Rounding out the top five were Mississippi State (623) and Boise State (625). Southern Mississippi’s Vicky Correa (147) took home medalist honors after defeating Mississippi State’s Erika Thornton (147) with a par on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. Freshman Ember Schuldt (153) led the way for the Illini after rounds of 79-74, to finish in a tie for seventh.

Juniors Samantha Sloan (154) and Hailey Koschmann (154) finished a stroke behind Schuldt to finish tied for 12th. Sloan recorded rounds of 78-76, while Koschmann started off slow with an 81, but finished strong with a second round 73. Juniors Katelin Dilger (157), who had rounds of 79-78 and finished tied for 25th, and Nora Lucas (161), with rounds of 78-83 and finished in a tie for 37th, round out the Illini golfers.

“Every time Ember is able to post a solid round it gives her more and more confidence,” Slone said. “She struggled a bit in the first round, but she improved in the afternoon. She managed her emotions well and didn’t let her first round get her down. It just made her more determined and focused to go out and get it done and to do a better job in the second round.”

Illinois will complete its fall schedule on Nov. 1-2, as they travel to Austin, Texas, for the Challenge at Onion Creek.
