NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Fourth-seeded junior Dennis Nevolo claimed two matches Saturday to earn a spot in the quarterfinal round of the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Notre Dame. Nevolo opened the day with a win over Nelson Vick of Ohio State, 7-5, 6-3, before knocking off 10th-seeded Josh Graves of Northwestern, 6-1, 6-0. Nevolo will face fifth-seeded Blaz Rola of Ohio State on Sunday.
Also competing in the main draw earlier today was senior Abe Souza, who rallied past Timon Reichelt (Illinois State), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, before falling to top-seeded Chase Buchanan (Ohio State), 6-3, 7-6 (7).
In the consolation bracket, a pair of Illini sophomores captured first-round wins, as Bruno Abdelnour defeated Billy Bertha (Wisconsin), 6-1, 6-2, and Stephen Hoh topped Steven Williams (Ohio State), 6-3, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (10-3).
In second-round doubles action, Nevolo and Souza battled past Michigan's Justin Rossi and Barrett Franks, 9-8 (5), to advance to the round of 16 where they will face Bertha and Ricardo Martin of Wisconsin. In action from Friday night, third-seeded Hoh and senior Connor Roth were edged in the first round by DePaul's Bartosz Jozwiak and Sven Kasper, 9-8 (4).
