A split Fighting Illini women's track and field team concluded the second day of competition at the Indiana Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., and Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
Carlene Robinson and Ashley Whittaker both set new school records in the 600m and pole vault.
In Bloomington, Ind., the Fighting Illini had an impressive showing on the day, boasting two new school records, as well as a pair of provisional qualifying times. Senior Carlene Robinson won the 600m with a school record-breaking time 1:30.11. Also etching her name in the record books today was junior Ashley Whittaker. Whittaker took third in pole vault with a new school record of 12'08.25".
The Orange and Blue also tabbed two provisional qualifying times. Junior LaNeisha Waller ran a provisional qualifying time of 8.41 in the 60m hurdles to place third. Additionally, the 4x400m relay team of sophomore Omoye Ugiagbe and seniors Yvonne Mensah Camile Robinson and Carlene Robinson won the relay with a provisional qualifying time of 3:38.89.
Senior Kristina Jones grabbed a second-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 39'07.34". Mensah finished a solid day with a fifth-place finish in the 60m and fourth-place finish in the 200m.
"Today's performances set us up for next week's meet in Arkansas where we're going to see great competition," head coach Gary Winckler said. "Hopefully we can improve on the times and marks we've already set."
At the Meyo Invitational, freshman Angela Bizzarri took home the mile title with a personal-best time of 4:45.77. Stephanie Simms turned in a solid third-place performance in the 5000m with a time of 16:39.71.
The Illini return to action on Friday, Feb. 9, in Fayetteville, Ark., at the Tyson Invitational.
