Placida, Fla. -
The Fighting Illini men's golf team returned to the course today after a long winter break, opening up the 2006 spring season in Placida, Fla. against Illinois State in a dual match at Coral Creek Country Club. In a match play format similar to the Ryder Cup, the Illini won five of nine contests to defeat the Redbirds 5-4.
The 3rd annual spring match between the schools has been named the "Tinervin Cup" in honor of Jeff Tinervin, an Illinois State alumnus and supporter of both the ISU and Illinois golf programs. Illinois won four of the six singles matches, while Illinois State took two of the three two-player best ball matches. Blair Harkins, Andy Mack, Patrick Nagle and Mark Ogren were victories in singles while Kyle Hosick and Ogren won in best ball, with Ogren finishing as the lone Illini golfer to win in both formats.
Up next, the Illini head to Rio Mar, P.R. for the Puerto Rico Classic, Feb. 26-28.
