KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Once again, rest produced good results for the University of Illinois women's golf team on Monday at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate.
Junior Meghan Naik (Normal, Ill.) shot a season-best 75 to tie the best score of her career and lead the Orange and Blue to a third-place finish on the tournament's opening day. Naik had twice shot 76 this season and is tied for 11th place prior to Tuesday. Sophomore Seul Ki Park and senior Megan Godfrey carded 76s to tie for 16th place.
Three weeks ago, following a two-week break, the Illini recorded the fifth-best finish in school history when Park tied for second place in Franklin, Ind.'s Shootout at The Legends.
Campbell University leads the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate with a 301 after 27 holes. Coastal Carolina is two strokes behind, followed by Illinois which is seven back. Nebraska's Elli Brown and Campbell's Alejandra Shaw lead the field at one-over par 73. Seven golfers are tied for second place.
