RIO VERDE, Ariz. - Thursday's Rio Verde Invitational was not only the first spring tournament for the Illini, it was also a first for sophomore Stephanie Mory.
The Haslett. Mich. native's two birdies complemented a four-over 75 and grouped Mory with seven other golfers who finished one stroke behind a trio of leaders. Previously Mory scored four rounds of 77 in the fall. Fellow sophomore Seul Ki Park ended three strokes behind Mory with an opening-round 78 while the remaining four Orange and Blue golfers completed day one within two strokes of Park.
Big Ten foe Northwestern grabbed the clubhouse lead at +18. Host Western Michigan followed the Wildcats at 23-over par while five teams, including the Illini (+27), nip at the Broncos' heels. Individually Western Michigan's Jenna Walter joined Missouri Valley Conference golfers Bari Erais (Bradley University) and Missy Linnens (Missouri State) at the top of the first-round leaderboard.
