Columbus, Ohio - The 2004 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships began today with the first two rounds of action at the par 72, 6,201-yard Ohio State Scarlet Course. Illinois currently sits in ninth place with a 36-hole total of 625 after shooting a 312 in this morning's first round and following with a 313 in this afternoon's second round. Defending Big Ten champion Ohio State leads the tournament with a score of 600, owning a five-stroke lead over Indiana (605). Wisconsin sits in third place, 11 strokes behind the Buckeyes (611).
Senior Michelle Carroll is tied for 12th place individually to lead the Illini effort. Carroll carded the lowest round by a UI golfer on the day with her 3-over par 75 in round one. She added a 5-over 77 in round two for a 36-hole total of 152.
Senior Marla Cox carded back-to-back rounds of 78 and is tied for 21st with a score of 156. Sophomore Megan Godfrey (79 in round one) and freshman Meghan Naik (career-low 76 in round two) were the other Illini golfers to shoot in the 70s today. Godfrey and Naik are tied for 38th with two-round totals of 161.
Ohio State's Allison Hanna and Wisconsin's Malinda Johnson are tied for first in the 66-player field, both at 1-over par (145). Indiana's Danah Ford is in third, one stroke back with a 146.
The third round of the Big Ten Championships will be held Saturday, followed by the fourth and final round on Sunday.
