East Lansing, Mich. - The Illinois women's golf team is currently tied for seventh place after two rounds of play at the Mary Fossum Invitational, hosted by Michigan State University. The tournament is being played at the 6,053-yard, par-72 Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Michigan. The Illini shot a 322 in the morning round, but rebounded to fire a 304 in the second round for a total of 626, putting them in a tie for seventh place. Michigan State is currently in the lead after shooting a 601, while Indiana is in second, twenty-one shots back at 622.
Leading the way for the Illini today was senior Marla Cox. Cox shot a 6-over par 78 on the opening 18 holes, followed by a 2-over par 74 on the final 18 for a total 152, which puts her in a tie for ninth place. Courtney Mahon (Arkansas) is currently in the lead after shooting a 3-over par 147, which is two strokes better than Allison Fouch (Michigan State) and Noriko Nakazaki (Notre Dame).
Senior Michelle Carroll is also in the Top 20 individually for the Illini. Carroll opened with a 79, and followed that up with a 74 in the afternoon round, which puts her in a tie for 17th place at 9-over par, 153.
The third and final round of play at the Mary Fossum Invitational is set for tomorrow, September 20, 2003. Tee times will begin at 9 a.m. Eastern Time.
