Recap?|? Final Stats?|? Notes

Illinois head coach Ron Turner
"We got our butts kicked today. Coming into it we had a really good plan, but we were physically dominated early and never got to execute (it). They dominated us up front - we didn't get enough blocks. It's really discouraging because I don't know if I've been with a group of kids that works as hard, but can't show up on Saturday."

On Purdue's defense ...
"Defensively we knew they'd be as good as we'll see all year. They had no weaknesses. The linebackers are athletic and strong. They have good corners, and as good of a safety (Stuart Schweigert) as there is in the country. I think Purdue is one of the best teams in the conference. Defensively I don't know if there's anyone better. Before the season we looked to them to be one of the top teams in the Big Ten."

On Purdue running back Jerod Void and Purdue's offense ...
"Void is a good player. He had a simple plan, and just kept running it at us. We couldn't stop him. Offensively they just pounded us."

Illinois quarterback Jon Beutjer
"You got to give credit to Purdue. They've got a good defense, with a lot of seniors. When we get down like that, we need to just keep playing and not (try to) get it all back in one play. We needed to establish the run and the pass, but we didn't do that today. We didn't establish the run or the pass."

Illinois wide receiver Mark Kornfeld
"They've got a great defense and a great secondary. You've got to take your hat off to them. We came out really slow as an offense and as a team. In the blink of an eye it was 20-0. At this level, when you're playing against the type of guys Purdue has and against the type of athletes that are playing in the Big Ten, you can't spot teams 20 points and expect to come back on a regular basis. We battled back the week before this, but you can't make a living on that."

Illinois running back Carey Davis on Purdue's defense ...
"They did a good job. They knew what they were supposed to do, and they did it."

Illinois linebacker Winston Taylor on Purdue quarterback Kyle Orton ...
"We didn't expect him to come out (of the pocket) as much. From watching film, we knew he wasn't as good of a runner as Brandon Kirsch."

Purdue Quotes

Purdue head coach Joe Tiller
"We played a good game today, although we still haven't played a complete game. I say that because they did have a touchdown on a punt return. However, overall I was pleased with the way we performed this afternoon."

On the overwhelming advantage in time of possession...
"That goes to our success in the running game. We knew we wanted to make an effort to run the ball based on the success that Wisconsin had on the ground against Illinois. I think we figured to have a 50/50 play selection between the pass and run. I certainly didn't expect to have the kind of success on the ground that we had today."

On Purdue's defensive performance against the run...
"The front seven did an excellent job running to the ball. They have been tough to run against all year. They did a great job shutting down the middle. Of course, we got up early on them and forced them to throw the ball more. Nevertheless, our guys did a great job shutting them down and making them one dimensional."

Purdue running back Jerod Void
"The credit on our running success has to go to our offensive line. They did a great job of getting on their man today and they were making some big holes. I wasn't surprised by our success on offense. We knew that had been giving up a lot of yards on the ground coming into this game. We knew if the offensive line played like they do in practice, we would have a good game."

On scoring four touchdowns ...
"I just benefited on our great field position. We got some turnovers and had the ball in the red zone. That set us up for some easy scores."

Purdue quarterback Kyle Orton
"They had a hard time stopping our running attack, so there was no need to abandon that part of our game. That allowed us to run the clock down in the second half."

On having personal success running the ball ...
"I'm doing a better job at being aggressive and stepping up in the pocket. When my third and fourth reads are not there, I'm already in the seam and am ready to take off running. I'm just taking advantage of what the defense is giving me."

Purdue linebacker Niko Koutouvides
"Our defense tries to go out and play hard every game. Our guys are flying around and playing well-focused football. Illinois had one drive that ended with points, so we went right to the sidelines and corrected what we thought was wrong. We played a great game today - offensively and defensively."

On stopping the running game ...
"Every team's manhood is their rushing game. We take a great deal of pride in stopping that. We want to play physically and don't want anyone to be successful running against us. We have been playing well and want to continue that for the rest of the season."

Purdue wide receiver John Standeford
"Kyle Orton was getting us the ball in the spots that we needed to be in. We were making good plays on the ball. When we do that, we are going to make some big plays."

On blocking for the running game ...
"We are serious in both the running game and the passing game. The coaches do a great job working with us in practice, making sure we are blocking the guys we are supposed to. We just got in there today and made some nice blocks for our backs

Purdue safety Stuart Schweigert
"The defense came in with the mindset that we can't let a passing team get to run against us, which is what they did last season. Really, our focus this week was man-to-man coverage. Our cornerbacks did a great job. They played wonderfully against a team that had been putting points on the scoreboard. We faced the best quarterback we have seen so far this year, and held them to less than 200 yards in the air. Defensively, we did everything that we needed to do."
