WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Fighting Illini women's swimming and diving sophomore Crystal McAdam set a new Illinois standard in the 1000 yard freestyle in the first round of competition at the Big Ten Quad Duals at Purdue University. The Decatur-native touched the wall in 10:03.29, bettering the 15-year old record by more than two and a half minutes (Liz Grant, 10:06.03, 1987).
McAdam also took third place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:04.87. Alison Czmarko and Ilkay Dikmen also recorded third place finishes for the Illini. Czmarko swam a season-best 57.09 to finish third in the 100 back while Dikmen swam a 1:04.19 to take third place in the 100 breaststroke.Jessica Aveyard recorded a time of 1:51.66 to finish fourth in the 200 free, and Astrid Matthias took fifth place in the 200 butterfly with a 2:07.36.
In the 800 free relay, the Illini quartet of Jessica Eaton, Colleen Gorman, Paula Nosal and Jennifer Ochab finished second overall in a time of 7:37.20.
"I'm very pleased with the way we swam," Illinois Head Coach Sue Novitsky said. "We put together some good swims tonight. Some people are starting to come around and show some signs that they are adapting to the training changes that we have made. We'll keep making our way toward Big Ten's. We'll come back tomorrow morning and race hard as well."
After the first day of completion, the Illini trail in the team races. Illinois is behind Purdue, 120-65. The Illini are also short of Wisconsin, 119-63, and Minnesota, 104-81.
The second and final day of the Big Ten Quad Duals is Saturday at Purdue.
