Eldina Fazlic gave top-seeded Anne Nguyen of Georgia a run for her money in the main draw single quarterfinal today at the Georgia Invitational. The Illini sophomore came out of the gate quickly to win the first set of their match, 6-1, but Nguyen recovered to be Fazlic decisively, 6-1, 6-2, in the last two sets.
But Fazlic wasn't done yet. Later in the day, she and junior Michelle Webb fought Zsofi Golopencza and Michaela Kratochvilova of Armstrong Atlantic State to the wire in the doubles semifinal before succumbing, 8-6.
Despite those losses today, Head Coach Sujay Lama was very pleased with his team's performance in the tournament. "We competed well this weekend," he said. "Our team made a statement nationally. Our players hung in there very well against tough competition. This is a great start to open our spring season."
The tournament concludes Monday with just one Illinois player remaining. Senior Simone Kung will play against Jill Buckley of Kentucky in the singles semifinal of the consolation bracket. Kung advanced to the semis with a 6-4, 6-1 victory today over Mason Miller of Georgia Tech and a walkover as a result of two injured players in the bracket.
