URBANA, Ill. - Illinois women's tennis student-athletes Rosie Seccia and Risa Ueno opened play at the ITA Midwest Regionals on Day 1 in the singles qualifying draw.
Seccia earned a win in her opening match over Illinois State's [9] Silvia Pomarolli, 6-4, 6-3. In her second match of the day, Seccia fell 6-4, 6-3 to Sophia Shlyakhta from Northern Illinois.
Ueno took a 6-2, 7-6(3) loss to [5] Ellison Reynoldson of Wisconsin in the qualifying round of 64. In the consolation draw, Ueno picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Illinois State's Sophia Lowe.
Two rounds of main draw doubles (R64 and R32) will open the slate on Friday, followed by the singles main draw round of 64. All four Illinois doubles tandems will be in action on Friday as well as all six singles players opening play in the main draw.
