CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The United States Olympic Swim Team Trials begin on
Wednesday (August 9) in Indianapolis, Ind. Six members of the 1999-2000
University of Illinois squad will be competing for spots on the roster in
Sydney.
Anna Christiansen is the only Illini who will compete in more than one
event. She will swim in the 400 individual medley and the 200 breaststroke,
both of which she swam at the NCAA Championships in March.
The first Illini swimmer to earn All-America status by finishing sixth in
the NCAA Championships, Jessica Aveyard, will participate in the 200
backstroke at the Trials. Teammate Kathy Kielty also will compete in that
event.
Darcy Adler, the UI record holder in the 100 breast, will compete in that
event. Two seniors from the 1999-2000 season also will participate in the
Trials. Natasha Messmer will compete in the 200 butterfly. She owns the UI
record of 2:02.00 in that event. Emily Wang will participate in the 100
freestyle.
