EAST LANSING, Mich. - At the Forest Akers West Golf Club in East Lansing, Mich., the Fighting Illini women's golf team shot a final round 339 to finish 11th of 18 teams at the Mary Fossum Invitational with a 54-hole total of 975. The three newcomers on the team were the top golfers for Paula Smith's Illinois squad.
Indiana won the event by 22 strokes over Kent after shooting rounds of 298-304-299=901.
Newcomer Laurin Kanda (Fr., Chico, Calif.) was the Illini leader for the second consecutive tournament. She shot 79-79-82 for a 240 and was tied for 29th in the standings. Last week in the season opener, she fired rounds of 76-77-77 and tied for 11th at the Northern Intercollegiate in Madison, Wis.
This week two more freshmen finished two-three for the Illini with Renata Young (Rogers, Ark.) shooting 79-77-86 for a 242 and Stephanie Cheney (Mill Valley, Calif.) shooting 88-78-83 for a 249.
"We are very encouraged by our start to the season," Head Coach Paula Smith said. "Our 314 in the second round this week was a great effort by the team. Our three freshmen all shot in the 70s in that round and Lorette Lyttle shot 80." Illini golfers have posted 10 rounds in the 70s through two tournaments this year, which is only two rounds shy of the total number of rounds in the 70s last season.
In Sunday's final round, senior Nell Macke (Marshall, Ill.) shot 88, which was counted in the team score. She shot 78-91 in the first two rounds. Lorette Lyttle (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) added a 90 on Sunday, but that score was not counted in the team total. Only the team's top four scores are counted. Christine Scott (Sr., Lockport, Ill.), who shot 88-90 on Saturday, withdrew from Sunday's final round.
The Illini will be back in action in two weeks at the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor.
