About Illini Cheerleading

The Fighting Illini Cheerleading Team is an energetic and highly visible group of athletes, carefully selected to represent the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics and serve as spirited ambassadors for the university. Whether cheering at major athletic events, university functions, or engaging with the community, these cheerleaders are at the heart of school pride.  Their energy extends beyond the sidelines as they connect with young fans, snap photos, and share memorable stories with fans and loyal alumni from years past.

Fighting Illini Cheerleading is a top-tier program within the Big Ten, demanding unwavering commitment from its members. Cheerleaders dedicate countless hours each week perfecting their skills in practice and focusing on strength training and conditioning to stay game-ready and in peak form.

One of the most exciting aspects of being a Fighting Illini cheerleader is the chance to travel across the country, spreading the Illini spirit at high-profile sporting events. From away football games and Big Ten basketball tournaments to bowl games and NCAA championships, cheerleaders are front and center, inspiring fans nationwide.

Fighting Illini Cheerleaders are considered student athletes and nearly all expenses associated with being a member are covered by the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics. Nike is an official corporate sponsor and members of the team receive Nike practice gear, warm-ups, travel gear and shoes. Uniforms, poms and megaphones are also provided at no cost.

Cheerleaders will have two academic advisors at Illinois - one on campus through their major and one through the athletic department. Illinois has its own student-athlete academic center where assistance is provided in the areas of class scheduling and career counseling. Cheerleaders have access to computers, printing, and free tutoring through the academic center.

An athletic trainer is present at every practice and game. The main training room is located in Memorial Stadium with first-class care provided by top athletic trainers and two staff physicians who provide evaluations and health care for our cheerleaders.
