BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Illinois evened its road series against Indiana with a 9-7 win at Bart Kaufman Field on Friday night.
The Fighting Illini scored twice in the top of the 10th before Reed Gannon held the Hoosiers scoreless in the bottom half of the frame as the Orange and Blue improved to 28-24 overall and 14-15 in Big Ten play.
Will Johannes and Kyle Schupmann both hit home runs for the Illini, with Schupmann's two-run shot coming in the first before Johannes went yard on a three-run homer in the eighth. Johannes reached base four times, going 2-for-3 while recording three RBI, two runs scored, and two walks.
Michael Farina tallied his third straight multi-hit game, recording a 2-for-3 day at the plate with two RBI. Schupmann went 1-for-4 with two RBI while also going on via a walk.
Aidan Flinn got the start, recording five innings of work and four strikeouts. Sam Mommer retired the first nine batters he faced, while Gannon earned the win – his fifth of the season – with 1.1 scoreless frames.
The Illini opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first, though the Hoosiers responded with the game's next three runs to even the contest at 3-3 through six.
The visitors went ahead once again on Farina's sacrifice bunt in the seventh before Johannes extended that advantage with his three-run home run in the eighth. Indiana continued to battle, sending the game to extras with four runs in the bottom of the ninth.
After loading the bases with no outs in the top of the 10th via two walks and a hit by pitch, the Illini capitalized with two runs in the frame to take a 9-7 edge. Gannon held the Hoosiers off the board in the bottom of the 10th to secure the win.
