INDIANAPOLIS – The men's and women's track and field teams completed the Hoosier Horsepower Classic on Saturday (Jan. 17) from the Fall Creek Pavilion. Shot putter Jacob Cookinham and high jumper Kennedy Ocansey both registered top-10 program marks this afternoon.
In his Illini debut Ocansey wasted no time etching his name into the program's top-10 list as he now owns the school's fourth-best high jump in his win today, 2.18m (7-1 3/4). That mark also currently ranks as the sixth-best mark in the nation which has him in a position to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Cookinham won the men's shot put as he threw the program's seventh-best mark at 18.52m (60-9 1/4) while his teammate Alex Sohn placed second, 17.17m (56-4).
Oluwatomilayo Akintunde won the shot put on a 14.86m (48-9) toss and Azariyah Bryant sprinted to the 60m finals gold (7.50). Mia Morello added another event win for the Illini in the pole vault, 4.20m (13-9 1/4).
Naomi Bey-Osborne broke the tape in the 400m (54.65) just a tenth of a second away from cracking the program's top-10 list and teammate Ashley Oliver was directly behind in second (55.47).
On the men's side in the 400m the Illini took the top three spots with Jackson Gilbert in first (46.85), Tadeas Placek in second (48.63) and Joshua Hoffmann in third (49.61).
