LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The 12th-ranked Fighting Illini men's golf team holds the 36-hole lead at the Windon Memorial Classic heading into Tuesday's final round at Knollwood Club.
The Orange and Blue are 24-under through two rounds and hold a four-shot lead in the team race with three Illini golfers sitting inside the top 10.
Senior Ryan Voois (-7) paces the Illini in third place after carding rounds of 67 (-5) and 70 (-2) on Day 1. Voois' opening round was bogey free and his scorecard remained clean at 8-under through 26 holes before his first bogey of the day on No. 9 in Round 2. He closed out the day with two birdies to offset two more bogeys on the back nine and sits three strokes off the lead entering Round 3.
Junior Max Herendeen and sophomore Trey Marrion are one shot off Voois' pace in a tie for sixth at 6-under. Both closed out strong performances late on Monday. Herendeen was 1-under after a bogey on No. 2 early in his second round, but he was blemish-free from that point and closed the day with five more birdies over his final 16 holes. Marrion, who teed off on No. 3, recorded his final bogey of the day on his opening hole of Round 2 before shooting 4-under over his last 17 holes.
Sophomore Freddie Turnell, making his first start in the lineup after competing as an individual in his Illini debut at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational, is just one shot behind Herendeen and Marrion in a tie for 12th after carding rounds of 69 (-3) and 70 (-2).
Junior Dane Huddleston is 1-under heading into the final round where he sits in a tie for 33rd with true freshman Dujuan Snyman, competing as an individual.
