CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Two Illinois defensive standouts, outside linebacker Gabe Jacas and defensive back Xavier Scott, have been named to the preseason watch list for the 2025 Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced Tuesday.
The Illini duo is among 60 players listed in consideration for the National Defensive Player of the Year honor. Illinois is one of 12 programs nationally with multiple players listed on the preseason watch list along with Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Texas, and Texas Tech. Illinois defensive lineman Johnny Newton was one of five finalists for the trophy in 2023.
BRONKO NAGURSKI TROPHY
The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is presented to the best defensive player in college football each year. Launched in 1993 to complement the Heisman Trophy Award, the Bronko Nagursky Trophy is voted on by the Charlotte Touchdown Club and members of the Football Writers Association of America. The trophy is named in honor of Pro Football and College Football Hall of Famer Bronko Nagurski.
