Illini Fall in One-Run Thriller at Washington

Recap

SEATTLE -- Illinois baseball (21-15, 9-8) fell at Washington (21-19, 11-6), 4-3, last night at Husky Ballpark. The setback snaps a run of three-straight series wins for the Illini.

The Orange and Blue got stellar multi-inning relief outings from Reed Gannon (3.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 SO) and Mitch Dye (2.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 SO) but the two unearned runs would prove to be the difference in the ballgame.

Kyle Schupmann (2-for-3) and Jacob Schroeder (2-for-4) each launched solo shots and Vytas Valincius also tallied a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-4. Coltin Quagliano also picked up an RBI in the contest with a sacrifice fly.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Huskies used a two-out double in the first to take a 2-0 lead in the game.

Illinois got on the board in the fourth when Quagliano brought home Collin Jennings with a sacrifice fly but the hosts got that run right back in the home half of the frame to make it 3-1.

The Illini again would make it one-run game when Schupmann led off the inning with his solo blast to make it 3-2.

Schroeder would tie it up at 3-3 in the seventh with a lead-off solo shot and Illinois looked to take the lead in the inning but left a runner stranded at third.

Washington took back the lead in the eighth to make it 4-3 but Zach Bates was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the deficit at one.

Schroeder doubled with one out in the ninth to try and start a rally, and Illinois would load the bases with just one away, but they were unable the push any runs across, falling 4-3.
