BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Illinois swept its sixth match of the season as Fighting Illini women's tennis earned a 4-0 win at Indiana on Friday. The victory in Bloomington marked the Orange and Blue's fourth road win of the year.
No. 42 Illinois improved to 12-11 on the season and 7-5 in Big Ten action with the victory. Indiana moved to 8-14 overall and 2-10 mark in Big Ten play with the loss. The Fighting Illini have now secured the last three decisions over the Hoosiers.
The Illini claimed their 15th doubles point of the season, striking first against the Hoosiers. Illinois has won the opening tally nine times in Big Ten play.
Violeta Martinez and Alice Xu were the first off the doubles courts, earning a 6-2 win at No. 2. The Illini tandem is up to a 12-5 record on the season including a 7-3 mark in Big Ten action. At No. 3 doubles, McKenna Schaefbauer and Kasia Treiber won a 6-3 decision to clinch the match's opening point. The duo is now 16-12 on the season and 9-2 in league play.
Martinez was the first off the singles courts as well, winning a 6-1, 6-4 straight-set decision at No. 2. The junior improved to 11-7 on the season with her first decision at No. 2 singles of the year.
Ariel Madatali was the next off the courts, pushing the Illini advantage to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles. The freshman made late surges in both sets, trailing 2-3 in the opening frame and was knotted at 3-3 in the second. Madatali is now 17-8 overall and 5-1 in Big Ten play.
For the second straight match, Treiber would clinch the win for the Fighting Illini. The senior was victorious in the lone three-set match to finish. Treiber won the opening set 6-3 before falling 2-6 in set two. She trailed 0-2 before rattling off five-straight games in the third frame, and ultimately won 6-3. Treiber improved to 11-14 overall and 5-4 in Big Ten play with the victory.
