CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Freshman Ian Sandoval earned not one, but two Big Ten weekly honors, the conference announced on Tuesday (Feb. 4). The freshman was named both the Freshman of the Week and Gymnast of the Week after a stellar performance vs. No. 4 Nebraska on Jan. 31.
After watching redshirt fifth-year and fellow all-arounder Sam Phillips go down with an injury in warm-ups, Sandoval had an outstanding meet to lead the Orange and Blue to a 321.300-320.800 victory over No. 4 Nebraska. Sandoval continued his upward trajectory from last week, earning a career-high 13.600 to start the night on floor, which was good for the event title. He later scored 13.500 on parallel bars, earning a three-way tie for first place. He also secured the all-around title with an impressive 79.250, marking his third win of the evening. His standout performances included career highs on floor exercise (13.600), parallel bars (13.500), and high bar (13.050).
The Frisco, Texas native also earned Inside Gymnastics' NCAA Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 3, and was named the CGA Rookie of the Week on Jan. 29.
Sandoval and the Illini will return to competition on Saturday, Feb. 8, as they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to take on the No. 7 Wolverines at 1 p.m. CT.
