EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The No. 9 Illinois wrestling team completed the Cougar Clash on Sunday (Dec. 7) with two champions, Spencer Moore (125 pounds) and Kannon Webster (157 pounds).
No. 25 ranked Moore defeated No.21 ranked Trever Anderson of Northern Iowa in the 125-pound final via decision, 5-1. Moore was the No. 3 seed in the weight class while Anderson was the top seed. He opened his day with a 15-0 tech. fall win over Northern Iowa's Brandon Paez and followed it up with another tech. fall over Little Rock's Tyler Harper, 19-4, in the next round. In the semifinals he earned a hard-fought ranked win over Missouri's No. 22 Mack Mauger, 2-0.
No. 7 ranked Webster defeated No. 18 ranked J Conway (MIZ) in the 157-pound final via tech. fall, 16-1 (4:52). Webster was the top seed in the weight class and Conway was the No. 2 seed. He cruised through this tournament winning all his matches in dominating fashion. He opened with a 19-3 tech. fall over Ethan Mojena (BROWN) and followed that up with another tech. fall, 18-3, over PJ Murphy (SIUE). His semifinal bout ended with him pinning RJ Weston of Northern Iowa in 5:28.
No. 1 seed (No. 8 ranked) Braeden Scoles placed second at 165 pounds as he fell to No. 2 seed (No. 12 ranked) Ryder Downey of Northern Iowa 11-2 in the final. He received a first-round bye which put him straight in the quarterfinals against Northern Iowa's Jack Thomsen whom he pinned in 6:18. His semifinal bout was a bit more back and forth as he battled Oklahoma State's Kody Routledge to a 10-5 decision win.
No. 1 seed (No. 9 ranked) Luke Luffman finished second at 285 pounds after he was defeated by NO. 2 seed (No. 13 ranked) Wyatt Voelker of Northern Iowa via decision, 8-5. He won his first two matches by major decisions over Oklahoma State's Benjamin Mower, 13-4, in round one and Northern Iowa's Adam Ahrendsen, 15-4, in the quarterfinals. In his semifinal bout it was more defensive, but he still emerged victorious over Bryson Buhk (SIUE) in a 4-1 decision.
