TULSA, Okla. – The No. 12 Illinois wrestling team placed seventh at the 2025 National Duals Invitational sponsored by Paycom on Sunday afternoon defeating No. 17 Missouri, 26-18, after falling to No. 11 Virginia Tech, 19-18, in the consolation semifinals.
The Illini take home $25,000 in addition to their $10,000 check they won for winning fastest team takedown average in the first session yesterday.
VIRGINIA TECH RECAP
The morning started off in rollercoaster fashion for the Illini. The Hokies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead winning the 125-pound bout No. 1 (133 pounds) Lucas Byrd got the Orange and Blue on the board, 3-3, with his 5-2 decision over No. 17 Dillon Campbell.
Virginia Tech won the 141- and 149-pound bouts via major decision to score eight-team points and take its largest and final lead of the morning, 11-3.
No. 10 (157 pounds) Kannon Webster took the match next and left no doubt that he was the most dominant wrestler in this dual as he defeated Collin Gaj via tech. fall, 19-4 (5:35), to pull the Illini back within three, 8-11. No. 8 (165 pounds) Braeden Scoles tied the dual up at 11 with his 9-6 sudden victory win over Ryan Burton.
Redshirt freshman 174 pounder Colin Kelly earned another ranked win this weekend over No. 23 Sergio DeSiante, 13-7, to put Illinois back in front, 14-11. No. 26 (184 pounds) Chris Moore extended the Illinois lead to seven, its largest lead, with his 11-3 major decision over No. 22 Jaden Bullock.
The Hokies won the final two bouts at 197 and 285 pounds to tie the dual up at 18 and forcing the dual to head to tie breakers. After criteria one of pins and criteria two of match points were both even, Virginia Tech won on the third criteria of near fall points (VT: 4, ILL: 3) to claim the dual 19-18.

MISSOURI RECAP
The Fighting Illini dominated Missouri in the seventh-place match. No. 23 (125 pounds) Spencer Moore got it started with a 4-0 shutout win over No. 28 Mack Mauger and No. 1 Byrd followed it up with a lightning-fast pin in just over a minute of No. 20 Kade Moore to put Illinois up 9-0.
After the Tigers won the 141-pound bout to get on the board Will Baysingar got the Illini back on track at 149 pounds with his 3-2 overtime win over Easton Hilton. No. 10 Webster decisioned Seth Mendoza, 5-3, to give Illinois a 15-3 lead at the halfway point.
No. 8 Scoles dominated Joel Mylin in a 20-5 (5:44) tech. fall and Kelly won over No. 13 Cam Steed via injury default which gave Illinois its largest lead at 26-3. Missouri would go on to take the next three matches via 7-2 decision at 184 pounds, injury default at 197 pounds and forfeit at 285 pounds to make the final 26-18 for Illinois.
