MINNEAPOLIS – Illinois rising junior Tate Costa and alum Alex Diab are set to compete at the Olympic Trials beginning Thursday, June 27 at 5:30 p.m. CT. The gymnasts will compete for one of the five spots available on the Olympic roster. Costa and Diab qualified for the trials after their stellar performances at the Xfinity U.S. Championships in early June. Â
ILLINI OLYMPIC HISTORYÂ
Seven Illinois men's gymnastics alumni (Abraham Grossfeld, Don Tonry, Charles Lakes, Dominick Minicucci, Justin Spring, and Tyson Bull) have competed in five different Olympic games. Former student-athlete and former head coach Justin Spring was the most recent Orange and Blue competitor to make the cut for Team USA and brought home a team bronze medal from the 2008 Beijing games.Â
HOW WE GOT HEREÂ
At the 2024 Xfinity U.S. Championships, Costa competed in the all-around, adding a plethora of new skills since the end of the collegiate season. The Narragansett, R.I., native finished 25th overall, with his best score of the meet coming on vault (26.825; 13.425, 13.400).Â
"This is an experience of a lifetime for Tate," head coach Daniel Ribeiro said. "He earned his spot and is ready to hit some routines. Tate embodies excellence in every category, and this is just the beginning of his story!"
Diab focused solely on the still rings and claimed his third title with a combined score of 29.450 (14.800, 14.650).
"Alex became the greatest ringman in Illinois history, and now he is number one in the country," said Ribeiro. "Having an Illini alum at the Olympic Trials with Tate is going to be an incredible experience for both of them."Â
