LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Fighting Illini men's gymnastics' freshman Brandon Dang earned a bronze medal at the 2024 Winter Cup at the Kentucky International Convention Center.
The Winter Cup is a two-day competition in which athletes must qualify for the second day. After completing both days, the scores are then averaged together to decide the winners of the gold, silver and bronze medals.
Dang, a pommel horse specialist, scored well both days of the Winter Cup – notching a 14.200 on day one and a 14.850 on day two.
McCool competed on floor and vault – scoring a 12.950 on floor and a 12.500 on vault. Costa competed in the all-around, scoring a 12.200 on floor, a 12.650 on pommel horse, a 12.250 on still rings, a 13.050 on vault, a 13.100 on parallel bars and a 12.400 on high bar. Unfortunately, their scores were not good enough to qualify for the second day.
Former Illini Alex Diab dominated on still rings, scoring a 14.750 on the first day and a 14.750 on the second day, winning the gold medal.
After a two-week team bye, the Illini will be back in action this Friday against William & Mary/Simpson at 6 p.m. CT at Huff Hall for Ninja Warrior Night.
