Letter from Athletic Director Josh Whitman to the Illini FamILLy

News

Dear Fellow Illini,

I write to you from Orlando, where thousands of fellow famILLy members – fans, alumni, and donors – will converge in the coming days to cheer for our beloved Fighting Illini football team in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. Appearing in this prestigious game for the first time in 35 years represents a significant milestone for our program, which is experiencing notable success under fourth-year head coach Bret Bielema.

Coach Bielema has infused the program with a tireless work ethic, a burning competitive fire, and a peerless commitment to detail. The results have been striking. This year marked only the eighth 9-win regular season in school history, highlighted by some of the great team performances in recent memory and 11 weeks ranked in the Associated Press Top 25. The season culminated with a No. 20 position in the final College Football Playoff rankings and our second New Year’s bowl game in the last three years.

Thanks to you and thousands of others, the buzz around Illinois Football is palpable. The Big Ten’s best tailgating only got better this season, with a sea of Orange and Blue spreading every direction from Memorial Stadium on game days. And by kickoff, nearly 55,000 people filled Memorial Stadium each Saturday, helping the University of Illinois celebrate the 100th anniversary of our venerable home with two sellouts and our highest average attendance in 15 years. And celebrate we did, with six home wins for the first time since 2001, including one Saturday, the stadium’s official Rededication Game against the Wolverines of Michigan, that will live forever in the annals of Illinois Football.

Memorial Stadium - Illinois vs Michigan 10/19/2024

Football has provided the capstone of 2024 – a year that has been, unequivocally, one of the greatest in the storied history of Fighting Illini Athletics. The men’s basketball program joined football in posting one of its best seasons, continuing its assault on the Illinois record books under head coach Brad Underwood. In March, the Illini cut down nets for the third time in four years, winning the Big Ten Tournament title and advancing to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005. The season ended with 29 wins, the third-most in school history, and a final national ranking of No. 6 in the AP Top 25. State Farm Center witnessed 11 sellout crowds en route to record-breaking ticket revenue for the third consecutive season. Illinois is currently one of only 14 teams in the country to qualify for four consecutive NCAA Tournaments and one of only five schools in the midst of five straight 20-win seasons.

The excitement inside State Farm Center was not limited to our men’s basketball team. Women’s basketball head coach Shauna Green has led one of the sport’s great turnarounds since arriving in 2022. The momentum surrounding her program is unmistakable, highlighted by our largest average home attendance in more than two decades. In April, the team captured the first postseason title in program history, winning the championship of the inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament. After an absence of more than 20 years, the team returned to the AP Top 25 in Coach Green’s first season and has now appeared in the polls in each of the last three seasons, including again this year. In November, Coach Green signed a Top 10 national recruiting class.

This year saw Illinois earn four Big Ten titles, the most for our program in nearly a decade. Along with the men’s basketball title, baseball won its third championship under long-time leader Dan Hartleb; women’s track and field, led by second-year coach Petros Kyprianou, won the indoor title for the first time since 2013; and men’s gymnastics, under the tutelage of alumnus Daniel Ribeiro, claimed the regular season dual-meet crown. Our most consistently successful program, men’s golf, continued its dominance under Mike Small, winning an NCAA Regional title and finishing first in stroke play at the NCAA Championships. Additionally, two Illini brought home individual national titles: men’s gymnast Tate Costa won high bar and field athlete Rose Yeboah took gold in the high jump.

These achievements are not possible without your unwavering support. In addition to the attendance and revenue numbers noted above, in FY24 the I FUND generated $8.27 million, the highest annual giving in a decade. In addition, your support of ICON, the official collective of Illinois Athletics, has provided millions of dollars in opportunities for Fighting Illini student-athletes and allowed us to recruit and retain the nation’s best and brightest to wear the Orange and Blue. We could not – and cannot – do this without you.

A championship mindset is spreading to every corner of our program. From coaches to student-athletes, from staff to administration, from fans to ticketholders, from donors to sponsors, we are beginning to look and act like champions. But make no mistake: we have not arrived. There is no crown in our future. There is only more work. More grit. More sacrifice. More investment. More moments. More memories. More fun. This process will never be about a destination. It must always remain about the journey.

Like true champions, we must guard against one dreaded emotion: complacency. Now, more than ever, we must press forward. Dramatic change to the college athletics ecosystem is looming, and with it, an incredible opportunity for the Fighting Illini to take advantage of the disruption, to lean into the uncertainty, and to leapfrog our competition. But we must double our efforts, quicken our pace, and narrow our focus.

Luke Altmyer Michigan 2024 Celebration

Did you enjoy 2024? Then ask yourself what you are willing to do for 2025 to be even better. Because when our famILLy sets its mind to something, we have proven that there is no limit to what we can accomplish.

So take a moment, friends, and savor 2024. It was a year for the ages, and every person associated with this program has ownership in our accomplishments. Then roll up your sleeves and prepare yourself for 2025. Because we are just getting started.

Thank you, and happy holidays!
