ROSEMONT, Ill. – Illinois redshirt freshman wrestler Kannon Webster was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week the conference announced on Thursday (Nov. 14). He's the first Big Ten Freshman of the Week winner in program history.
Webster is ranked No. 10 at 149 pounds by InterMat and he's a perfect 6-0 to start his redshirt freshman season. Over the weekend he went 5-0 including a 3-0 slate in the Journeymen Collegiate Classic tournament on Nov. 10 where he took home the Hammer Award in the top 149-pound bracket. He pinned Harvard's Jaden Pepe in 1:17 in round one, decisioned Alex Nini of Rutgers, 4-1, in round two and beat Cross Wasiliewski (PENN) via 8-7 decision in the first-place match.
A day earlier on Nov. 9 he went 2-0 in his matches in the Binghamton and Arizona State duals with two bonus point wins. He got the tech. fall in five minutes over Binghamton's Ivan Garcia, 21-3 and picked up the major decision over No. 14 Jesse Vasquez of Arizona State, 21-7.
