Four Illini Earn Big Ten All-Conference Honors

News

URBANA, Ill. – The 2023 Big Ten Softball All-Big Ten teams were announced by the conference office Wednesday morning, with four different Illini earning All-Big Ten honors.

Kailee Powell and Kelly Ryono were named to the Second Team All-Big Ten. Delaney Rummell earned an All-Defensive Team nod and Miranda Gallardo was the Fighting Illini's Sportsmanship Award honoree.

Powell earned Big Ten accolades for a third-straight year. The Fighting Illini first baseman owns a .298 hitting clip with a .404 slugging percentage. Powell has shined in league play all season as the fifth year holds a .362 batting average to pace the Illini squad while also logging six extra-base hits and six RBI. In 2022, Powell was also named to the Second Team All-Big Ten. Following the 2021 campaign, Powell was on both the All-Defensive Team and the First Team All-Big Ten.

Earning her first ever all-conference bid, Ryono leads the Fighting Illini with a .349 batting average, 12 home runs and 47 RBI this season. The senior posts 22 extra-base hits on the year and holds a .627 slugging percentage during her senior campaign. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native hit .324 against league foes, with a .618 slugging percentage that included five doubles and five home runs. Ryono also leads the team with 17 multi-hit games including six three-hit games

The Illini's starting third baseman for four-straight seasons, Rummell has been a force at the hot corner this year. During her senior campaign, Rummell has just two errors on the year, holding a .986 fielding percentage in 2023. In conference play alone, the Gilberts, Ill., native recorded a single error, helping her to a .980 fielding percentage.

Gallardo was named the Sportsmanship Award honoree for Illinois, her first recognition this season. The senior from Buena Park, Calif., has played in 14 games this season, scoring five runs.

Illinois softball battles the fifth-seeded Wisconsin Badgers in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday. First pitch on Big Ten Network is slated for 7 p.m. from Eichelberger Field.
