HOUSTON – The Illinois women's golf team opened the ICON Invitational in seventh place after carding a first round total of 286 (-2) and a second round 276 (-12), heading into Tuesday's final round at the Golf Club of Houston. The Illini's 12-under second round is the second-lowest team round in program history.
Isabel Sy shot a nine-under 63 in the second round, setting the new program record for lowest individual round. Crystal Wang was the previous record holder at eight-under, setting that mark at last year's ICON Invitational.
Sy opened the day with a 68 (-4) before her record setting second round. The San Gabriel, Calif., native tallied nine birdies in her bogey-free round, including six on the back nine. She enters tomorrow's third round in all alone in second place at 13-under, one stroke off of the tournament lead.
"I actually was not really aware what my score was," Sy said. "I did my best to stay in the moment and play simple golf. I was just enjoying my opportunity to compete in a great tournament with amazing weather and the people surrounding me."
"I am so grateful to have had my personal best competition round and it was a truly memorable day."
Wang recorded rounds of 72 (E) and 71 (-1), and is tied for 34th, while Siyan Chen shot consecutive rounds of 72 (E) and is tied for 39th.
