Fresh off their first bye week, the Fighting Illini will finish its nonconference schedule against Chattanooga at Memorial Stadium. The Thursday night fixture will be the first in program history, while it will be the second time Illinois has participated in a Thursday game at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT in Champaign, and the game will be aired nationally on Big Ten Network.
The Illini are looking to go undefeated in nonconference play for the first time since 2011, but Chattanooga enters the contest 3-0 on the season and sits ninth in the FCS Coaches Poll.
With the return of Big Ten play around the corner, Illinois will look to remain perfect at home in front of the Illini home crowd and a packed student section.
Here are three storylines to watch ahead of the Thursday night showdown.
Offense: Can the Illini break through the disciplined Chattanooga run defense?
Chase Brown leads all Division I rushers with 496 yards on the ground and is averaging over 165 rushing yards per game, which is on pace to be a career-high.
The Mocs' defense is averaging just 78 rushing yards per game through three contests, which ranks ninth among FCS teams that have played more than one game.
Something has to give on Thursday night. Though Josh McCray remains sidelined, the trio of Brown, Reggie Love III, and Chase Hayden have proven capable of filling that hole, totaling an average of 224 rushing yards per game.
A reduction in penalties, especially those that cancel out big gains, will also be key, and head coach Bret Bielema says this has been a talking point throughout the bye week. With a strong run game paired with a balanced pass game, the Illini should be able to build some momentum ahead of the return of conference opposition.
"We're a 2-1 football team – much rather be 3-0 – but we're trying to go 1-0 this week," Bielema said. "The things that we've learned, we've been able to overcome those things, and it's much better to coach those moments out of winning moments than losing moments."
Defense: Can Illinois replicate its performance against Virginia and get to the QB?
Unlike the Illini's meeting with Virginia last season, the defense was able to get to quarterback Brennan Armstrong, and that pressure paid off. Illinois allowed 180 passing yards, forced a 36% completion rate, recorded five sacks and two interceptions, and came away with a dominant win to move to 2-1 on the campaign.
Chattanooga has allowed just one sack through three games, and quarterback Preston Hutchinson has thrown for 752 yards and five passing touchdowns alongside four rushing scores, making it essential that the defensive line applies constant pressure.
The dynamic duo of Keith Randolph Jr. and Jer'Zhan Newton has been a problem for opposing offensive lines all season, combining for five quarterback hurries, 3.0 sacks, 6.5 tackles for loss, and 30 total tackles through three games. That tandem will need to find a way to make Hutchinson and the Chattanooga offense uncomfortable for the Illini to win this game.
Know the foe
The Chattanooga offense features a balanced aerial and ground attack, averaging over 250 passing yards and 185 rushing yards thus far across wins over Wofford, Eastern Illinois, and North Alabama.Â
Led by Hutchinson, the Mocs have eight receivers who have caught at least four passes, with Jamoi Hayes leading the way with nine. The run game is headlined by Ailym Ford, a two-time First-Team All-SoCon running back who is averaging over 110 rushing yards and has six total touchdowns.
While Chattanooga is Illinois' first FCS opponent since 2018, Bielema knows his Illini squad will need to be 100% focused to win against a talented Mocs program.
"I think anybody can get anybody on any given day in the world that we're living in with (the transfer) portals and guys playing at a higher level," Bielema said. "I think it really goes down to how the two teams show up on Saturday. You don't have to do anything but perform at your best, and usually the things that you do there are good enough to hopefully put yourself in a position to win.Â
"This Thursday night it's going to be UT-Chattanooga, but it's 11 on 11 in all three phases of the game, and we'll see what happens."
