KNOXVILLE, Ten. – Illinois men's tennis Nic Meister, Mathis Debru and Kenta Miyoshi walked away with singles wins to close out the Knoxville Showdown hosted by Tennessee.
Day one
Illinois men's tennis Nic Meister, Oliver Okonkwo, Mathis Debru and Kenta Miyoshi gathered two wins in doubles play and two wins in singles play against MTSU, Columbia and North Carolina on the first day of the Knoxville Showdown hosted by Tennessee.
Graduate student Meister paired up with freshman Miyoshi for a doubles match against MTSU's Marcel Kamrowski and Ondrej Horak, beating them 6-1.
The two transfers, Okonkwo and Debru, matched up together and beat Columbia's Hugo Hashimoto and Ishaan Ravichander, 6-3.
In singles action, Meister swept MTSU's Shu Matsuoka, 6-1, 6-1 while Debru beat North Carolina's Mark Dillon 6-2, 6-2. Miyoshi battled in his match, but fell to Coumbia's Theo Winegar, 6-3, 6-7(3), 7-6(4).
Day two
Illinois men's tennis graduate student Nic Meister and doubles pair Oliver Okonkwo and Mathis Debru walked away with wins after the second day of the Knoxville Showdown hosted by Tennessee.
The doubles win puts the transfers at 2-0 in the tournament, after beating Tennessee's Shunsuke Mitsui and Kent Hunter 6-3. Debru also had a singles win, beating Columiba's Hugo Hashimoto 6-4, 7-6 (7).
Meister took on Tennessee's Gabriele Brancatelli for a close match, ultimately swaying in Meisters favor, 6-3, 7-6(4).
Freshman Kenta Miyoshi lost his singles match to Tennessee's Angel Diaz, 6-1, 6-2. Meister and Miyoshi stayed paired up for doubles play, but lost, 6-4, to the host school's Emile Hudd and Boris Kozlov.
Day three
Miyoshi earned his first collegiate victory, beating 6-3, 6-3 over Tennessee's Gabriele Brancatelli.
Sophomore transfer Debru tallied his third win in the tournament after defeating the host school's Boris Kozlov, 6-3, 7-6(4).
Meister fought his way to a win after battling through three sets against Tennessee's Angel Diaz in a 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(6) outcome.
In doubles play, Meister and Miyoshi fell 6-1, with graduate student Oliver Okonkwo and Debru also falling 6-2.
