CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Illinois men's gymnastics interim head coach Daniel Ribeiro helped lead Team USA's senior and junior men's and women's teams to 31 total medals at the Maccabiah Games in Israel.

"I am so proud of the success Team USA had at the 21st Maccabiah Games in Israel, earning 31 medals," said Ribeiro. "While the athletic accomplishments of these dedicated, hardworking, young athletes brought honor to their country, their pride also shined from what they learned through their exploration and experiences throughout Israel. As Jewish athletes from around the world gather in Israel to celebrate their love of sports, the resilience of the Jewish people is front and center. The pride runs deep and is overflowing."

"For thousands of years, the Jewish people across the globe have endured through persecution and slavery, antisemitism and a devastating genocide. It has only been 77 years since the Holocaust, the systemic effort to target Jewish people that was designed to exterminate them. This resulted in the murder of over six million Jewish men, women, and children which equals a third of the worldwide Jewish population at the time," Ribeiro continued. "Worldwide, the Jewish population has yet to recover to the numbers prior to World War II. Today, the coaching staff and athletes representing Team USA in the Maccabiah Games gather proudly in Israel, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with over 10,000 other Jewish athletes from 82 different countries competing in the second largest sporting event in the world."

While the competition does not conclude until July 26, the men's and women's teams competed on July 18 and 19, respectively.

The junior women's team won one individual bronze medal in beam as well as a team silver. The seniors women's team had three individual silver medals in balance beam, floor and all-around, and a bronze medal in vault and earned the team silver.

The junior men's team earned three gold medals on floor, pommel horse and vault with five silver medals in pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars and all-around and two individual bronze medals in high bar and all around as well as earning a team gold medal.

For the seniors men's team, three gold medals were awarded for floor, vault and high bar, three silver medals for still rings, vault and parallel bars as well as four bronze medals in pommel horse, vault, high bar and all around. The team also won a team silver medal.
