NORMAN, Okla. – Illinois men's gymnasts Ashton Anaya and Hamish Carter walked away with All-America honors in the still rings and all-around, respectively, as the Illini took sixth as a team at the 2022 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships. Anaya and Carter bring head coach Justin Spring's number of All-Americans coached to 80 in his 13-year career at the helm.
Illinois had its best rings performance of the season posting a 68.898 as a group, while Anaya scored a 14.300, which was good enough for fourth overall and All-America honors in the event.
Carter had a strong performance in the all-around with an 82.166 score and a sixth place finish. His floor score of 14.300 was good enough for 11th place and his high bar mark of 13.766 was 13th.
The Illini posted their second-highest score of the season on floor exercise with a 69.898 behind three 14-plus scores. Carter's 14.300 performance led the team with strong showings from juniors Connor McCool with a 14.266 (13th) and Josh Cook with a 14.200 (19th).
Junior Evan Manivong's 14.533 vault score just narrowly missed earning him All-America honors with a ninth-place finish. Michael Fletcher scored a 76.898 in the all-around for 15th overall.
