Illini Top Gophers in B1G Opener

URBANA, Ill. – The Illinois women's tennis team stayed undefeated at home in 2022 with a 4-1 win over Minnesota in its Big Ten Conference opener on Friday (March 18) evening in Atkins Tennis Center.

It was the 11th-straight win against the Gophers (12-4, 1-2 B1G) for the Illini, who improved to 8-5 on the season and 1-0 in league play. It also marked the seventh win at home for Illinois.

The Illini got off to a quick start in doubles action as junior duo of Ashley Yeah and Josie Frazier earned a 6-3 win on court two, before sophomore Kate Duong and freshman Megan Heuser sealed the point with a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles.

Duong continued the momentum into singles play as she struck first with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Rachel Hanford on court one, before freshman Kasia Treiber moved the Illini within one point of victory with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Anfisa Danilchenko at No. 5 singles.

After Minnesota's Maria Rizzolo got a point back with a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over Heuser on court four, Yeah finished off the win for the home team with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 win over Emilee Duong on court two. It was Yeah's second-straight clinching win at home after earning the fourth point against Cornell.

Illinois continues its four-match homestand with a 12 p.m. CT contest on Sunday (March 20) as the Illini host Wisconsin for Women in Sports Day at Atkins Tennis Center.
