CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois women's tennis team opened its 2022 home schedule in dominating fashion, sweeping Harvard, 7-0, on Thursday (January 20) night in Atkins Tennis Center.
"I was pleasantly surprised, certainly didn't expect to beat Harvard 7-0," said head coach Evan Clark on his team's performance on the night. "I think Harvard is a really good team with a lot of good players and we weren't worried about the match, but certainly we thought it was going to be a really tough match going in. I'm just really pleased with how the girls handled themselves and managed the match. It really was a routine match, so kudos to our team for taking care of business."
The Illini (2-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead following doubles with a pair of 6-1 wins from sophomore Kate Duong and freshman Megan Heuser on court one and junior Emily Casati and freshman Kasia Treiber on court three.
Duong continued her strong play at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Maxi Duncan, before Treiber made it 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Iveta Daujotaite on court five. The Illini made quick work of it after that as junior Josie Frazier secured a 6-3, 6-1 win over Mihaela Marculescu on court three minutes before a 6-2, 6-3 win from freshman Kida Ferrari over Angel You at No. 6 singles. Yeah and Heuser then rounded things out as the junior earned a 6-3, 6-1 win against Sophia Ho on court two and the freshman posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Sany Gawande on court four.
Illinois continues its homestand on Sunday as it hosts Eastern Illinois at 10 a.m. CT, before taking on Northern Illinois at 1 p.m. CT in Atkins Tennis Center.
