Illini Take Down Cornhuskers

Recap

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Fighting Illini soccer team took down Nebraska 3-1 Friday afternoon at Demirjian Park. The Illini move to 4-2-1 (4-2-1 B1G) on the season.

Senior Maggie Hillman, redshirt-sophomore Kendra Pasquale and junior Makena Silber tallied goals for the Illini on the afternoon. Pasquale, senior Hope Breslin and redshirt-sophomore Ashley Cathro added assists for the Illini. Senior Sami Sample added three saves on the afternoon for the Illini.

The Illini were down early after a Nebraska give-and-go led to a goal in the eighth minute. Five minutes after the Husker goal, Pasquale broke away from the Husker defense and placed a strike to the bottom right of the goal to give her a third goal on the season. After a flurry of defensive pressures and stops from the Illini, Pasquale placed a beautiful pass to Silber who shot it into the back of the net in the 35th minute for her second goal of the season to put the Illini up 2-1 going into the half.

Illinois continued to dominate in the second half, holding the Huskers to only three shots in the second-half despite four corner kick opportunities for Nebraska. The Illini added to the lead shortly after kickoff in the second half, with a center pass from Cathro bouncing off the foot of Breslin and right to Hillman for the Illini's third goal of the afternoon. The Illini finished the game off with strong defensive efforts, stifling the Huskers and pulling away for the league victory.

OFFENSIVE POWER

The Illini nearly doubled their total goals scored this season with three on the afternoon, tallying goals from three different players. Pasquale now leads the Illini in goals (three) and points (seven) on the season. The Illini also tallied 15 shots on the afternoon (eight on goal), both season-highs, and scored a season-high in points with nine.

UP NEXT

The Illini are back at Demirjian Park on Sunday, Mar. 21 to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes. Kickoff is set for 1 PM CT on BTN+. Prior to the game, eight Illini seniors will be honored for Senior Appreciation Day.
