URBANA, Ill. – The Illinois women's tennis team competed in their first home matches of the year this weekend in the Illinois Invitational. On Friday they battled Indiana and on Sunday they faced off against Purdue, while the Hoosiers and the Boilermakers played each other on Saturday. Singles and doubles matches were played each day and there were no team scores kept for this event
The Illini were led by freshman Kate Duong who won both of her singles matches on the weekend as well as two of three doubles matches. The squad took home victories in ten of the 13 singles matches played over the two days.
On Friday, Illinois squared off against Indiana and played eight doubles matches followed by seven singles matches. The Illini split the doubles matchups, winning four and dropping four to the Hoosiers. Senior Emilee Duong and sophomore Josie Frazier were victorious in each of their doubles matches on the day.
In the singles matches, Illinois dominated winning six of the seven. Highlights included a 6-0, 6-4 win by sophomore Emily Casati and a 7-5, 6-1 win from senior Asuka Kawai.
Sunday's matchup versus Purdue included three doubles matchups and six singles matches. Purdue got the better of the Illini in two of the doubles matches, but Kate Duong and sophomore Ashley Yeah secured the victory for Illinois in the third.
In singles, Illinois took four of the six matches, with Casati's match not being finished due to an injury. E. Duong, K. Duong, Kawai, and senior Sasha Belaya all secured a singles victory for the squad.

Next weekend the Illini will begin their official Big Ten schedule with a road trip to Iowa and Nebraska. The Illini will take on the Hawkeyes on Friday at 3:00 PM CT and the Cornhuskers at 11:00 AM CT on Sunday. These matches will count for the team's record and be played as dual play.
