MELBOURNE, Fla. -- A 3-under final round for the Illinois women's golf team moved the Illini up four spots to finish tied for seventh at the Moon Golf Invitational at Duran Golf Club. Illinois finished ahead of two top-10 ranked teams from the fall (No. 8 Florida and No. 9 Oklahoma) and tied with another (No. 7 Arkansas).Â
Freshman Isabel Sy led the Illini with her second under-par round of the three-day event, shooting 2-under on the day and 5-under for the tournament to finish in eighth place. Sy was Illinois' low scorer or tied for low scorer in each of the three rounds. She had nine birdies and only four bogeys in 54 holes.Â
Illinois' No. 2 finisher was Tristyn Nowlin, who finished tied for 26th place at +1. Reena Sulkar tied for 37th at +3, highlighted by a 71 (-1) in the final round, Crystal Wang finished +5 and Ali Morallos finished +6 for the tournament.Â
Illinois scored better on par-3s than any other team in the field with a total score of +3. Sy was 2-under on the par-3s in three rounds to tie for the best individual score on the short holes.
The Illini are off from competition until the Briar's Creek Invitational from March 15-16 at Johns Island, S.C. (The Golf Club at Briar's Creek).Â
Monday's Recap
Three Fighting Illini women's golfers posted 1-over scores of 73 Monday to lead Illinois to a 5-over day during the second round of the Moon Golf Invitational at Duran Golf Club. Tristyn Nowlin, Isabel Sy, and Crystal Wang were all 1-over as Illinois sits in a tie for 11th place among the 18-team field with 18 holes left.Â
Isabel Sy is in the top 10 of individuals entering the final round with a two-day score of -3. Sy is tied for seventh place as the Illini's top scorer after scores of 68 and 73.Â
Tristyn Nowlin is second among Illini with a two-day score of +2, good for 37th in the 93-player field. Ali Morallos, Reena Sulkar, and Crystal Wang are all +4 for the tournament.Â
Illinois' first two rounds have been highlighted by the best par-3 scoring in the tournament. The Illini are +1 on the par-3s as a team with three individuals - Nowlin, Morallos, and Sy - shooting under par on the holes.Â
Sunday's Recap
The Illinois women's golf team was one of six teams to shoot under par during Sunday's first round of the Moon Golf Invitational at Duran Golf Club. Freshman Isabel Sy shot a 4-under 68 to lead the Illini, which are in sixth place of the 18-team event.
Sy's round puts her in a tie for third place before Monday's second round. She had a flawless scorecard with 14 pars and four birdies. South Carolina's Pauline Roussin-Bouchard leads the individuals at -9.Â
Ali Morallos was Illinois' second-best scorer with an even-par 72 after starting the day with 12 straight pars. Tristyn Nowlin shot a 1-over 73 and Reena Sulkar fired a 2-over 74 to also score for the Illini.Â
Illinois is seven shots back of South Carolina in first place (-8) and five shots back of UCF in second (-6). Florida State, LSU, and Virginia are tied for third (-3).Â
