IOWA CITY, Iowa – No. 9 Illinois fell to No. 1 Iowa on Sunday afternoon, 36-6. Illinois freshman Luke Odom and redshirt sophomore Zac Braunagel picked up match wins for the Illini at 157 and 184-pounds, respectively. Illinois is now 4-1 on the season following Sunday afternoon's dual with the top-ranked Hawkeyes.
Justin Cardani lost by fall in the first ranked matchup of the day to 2019-20 Hodge Trophy winner and three-time All-American Spencer Lee. Lee secured the pin (2:30) in the first match of the afternoon, giving the Hawkeyes a 6-0 lead.
Lucas Byrd lost his first match of the season by major decision to Austin DeSanto at 133-pounds, giving Iowa a 10-0 lead. The Illini sophomore is now 4-1 on the season. Senior Dylan Duncan and Jaydin Eierman battled at 141-pounds in the second ranked matchup of the afternoon. Duncan earned an escape early in the third period to pull within 2, but ultimately lost by fall (6:05).
The 149-pound bout was tight from beginning to end, as both Mike Carr and Max Murin earned escapes to knot the score at 1 midway through the third period. A late takedown gave Murin a 3-1 lead, which he would hold onto for the remainder of the match. Illinois trailed the Hawkeyes, 19-0 following the bout. At 157-pounds, Johnny Mologousis lost by major decision, 13-4.
Freshman Luke Odom had an impressive performance Sunday afternoon, defeating Iowa's Joe Kelly in a 10-6 decision. Odom secured several takedowns, giving the Illini their first match win of the afternoon.
Sophomore DJ Shannon was up against top-ranked Michael Kemerer at 174-pounds and lost the bout by major decision.
Zac Braunagel battled with Iowa's Nelson Brands in a thrilling 184-pound bout that went into overtime. Braunagel earned a takedown late in the first overtime period, securing a 3-1 decision and second match win of the day for the Illini.
Junior Matt Wroblewski battled with Jacob Warner in the 197-pound bout, but ultimately lost by decision, 4-0. Sophomore Luke Luffman lost by fall to Iowa's Tony Cassioppi to wrap up the dual meet.
