Piscataway, N.J. – Illinois women's gymnastics beat Rutgers and Maryland with a score of 195.525 on Saturday. The Illini secured a .550 point lead after the first rotation and never trailed. They relied on strong performances on bars, beam and floor to narrowly beat out the Terrapins who finished with a 195.300 and the Scarlet Knights who scored 192.500.
"Our depth has continued to grow more and more so that is a really good thing," said head coach Nadalie Walsh. Â "Overall I think the team did a great job, they got two wins on the road. "While we would like to have ended vault stronger than we did, I don't think today was our identity, I think they will definitely be stronger on vault next week."
In their first rotation the Illini posted a 49.000 on bars. Sophomore Arayah Simons scored an 9.825, leading the Illini on the event. They followed that with a team score of 49.075 on beam where Mia Takekawa tied for the event title with the score 9.875.Â
In the third rotation Illinois scored 49.125 on floor. Junior Shaylah Scott and senior Kylie Noonan tied for the floor title with the score of 9.875. Â
Slight falters on vault led to a team score of 48.775 on the event, enough to earn them the victory. The Illini are now undefeated during the 2021 season and 2-0 in conference meets.
