Illini Tie Iowa in Big Ten Dual Meet

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Illinois men's gymnastics team earned three event titles to help the Illini to a 403.050-403.050 tie with Iowa at Carver Hawkeye Arena on Sunday afternoon.

With the tie, the Fighting Illini are now 6-3-1 overall, including 1-1-1 in the Big Ten conference.

Senior Sebastian Quiana and freshman Connor McCool shared the title on the floor exercise with scores of 14.700, marking a season-best and a personal-best, respectively. Sophomore Ian Skirkey grabbed the event title on pommel horse with a career high 14.350 and senior Danny Graham earned a 14.150 to take the title on still rings.

Quiana posted a career high vault score of 14.300 to finish second in the event. Freshman Evan Manivong and junior Max Diab had personal bests on floor with totals of 13.850 (seventh) and 14.300 (fourth), respectively.

Freshman Zach Ziolkowski set two career highs with a 13.250 on floor (10th) and a 14.150 on vault (T-4th).  Redshirt-junior Zach Treadway had two personal best of his own on the day after achieving a 12.600 on high bar for ninth place and a 13.350 on parallel bars for fourth. Freshman Josh Cook notched a career high 13.650 on high bar to finish in third.

Junior Joel Diaz recorded two season highs on still rings (13.650, third) and on parallel bars (12.650, ninth).

The Illini posted a season best 70.800 on floor.

How It Happened

First Rotation – Pommel Horse (66.150)

  • Skirkey's career-best 14.350 on pommel horse helped the Pepperell, Mass., native sit atop the podium. Redshirt-junior Tommy Mistretta followed in second with a 13.450, while junior Michael Paradise tied for third on the apparatus with a 13.250. Sophomores Emaunele Muehlhauser (12.650) and Hamish Carter (12.450) placed sixth and eighth, respectively.

Second Rotation – Floor Exercise (70.800)

  • Quiana and McCool claimed the floor title after tying with a meet-high 14.700. Diab finished in fourth with a career-best 14.300. Manivong's career high 13.850 was good for seventh place, while Ziolkowski took 10th with a personal best 13.250. With four career highs and a season-best, the Illini completed the event with a season high team score of 70.800.

Third Rotation – Vault (70.800)

  • Notching a career best, Quiana earned second on vault with a 14.400, and Manivong followed behind in third with a 14.250. Ziolkowski and Diab tied for fourth with Bennet Huang and Carter Tope of Iowa after achieving a 14.150. McCool placed ninth on the apparatus with a 13.950.

Fourth Rotation – Still Rings (65.200)

  • Graham collected his fourth still rings title this season when he recorded a 14.150. Diaz's season-high 13.650 was good for a third-place finish. Senior Satchel Hudson scored a 13.250 (seventh), Cook ad a 12.450 (10th) and Diab totaled 11.700 (11th).

Fifth Rotation – High Bar (64.250)

  • Earning third place for the Orange and Blue was Cook with a personal best 13.650. Quiana followed close with a 13.400 to take fourth. Manivong (12.650) and Treadway (12.600) placed eighth and ninth, respectively. Mistretta rounded out the event in 11th with a 11.950.

                                

Sixth Rotation – Parallel Bars (65.850)

  • The Illini finished strong on the last rotation, as Graham recorded a 13.600 to finish in second. Treadway posted a career-best 13.350 on the apparatus to take fourth, while Quiana placed fifth with a score of 13.300. Mistretta had a 12.950 to come in eighth, while Diaz had a season-best 12.650 to take ninth.

Up Next

The Fighting Illini return to Huff Hall on Saturday, March 7 for a Senior Day tri-meet with Michigan and Penn State at 2 p.m. CT. The meet will also be host to Kids Club Day.

Five Illini seniors will be recognized before the meet, and Illinois will hold an autograph session at the conclusion of the meet. The first 200 fans will receive free senior posters and All-American Kids Club members can redeem a free Kids Club Autograph Book. There will be a free kids zone and balloon artist present throughout the afternoon.
